Last week, energized students from Orion Alternative School in Redwood City, CA, eager to help children like themselves, participated in a walk-a-thon and raised $4000 for Asante Africa Foundation, all of which will go towards the purchase of uniforms for children in Kenya and Tanzania. In helping them get fired up for this walk-a-thon, Cheza Nami with the help of Master Drummer/Dancer/Performance Artist, Ibou Ngom, visited these students in March and provided multi-day assemblies. We shared with them songs, instrument play, games, dress-up activities and stories of life in Africa and left them feeling energized and ready fundraise . We are proud of these energetic and philanthropic youth and their willingness to help others in another part of the world. We caught up with the teens from Vera Casey Collaborative- Berkeley as they bonded and played with their tots during their exclusive visiting hours at the Habitot children's museum. And oh boy did we play! We brought our instruments and music and guided these young parents and their tots in some interactive play and dance.
“The children, who are usually unattached and dong their own thing when we are working with parents were participating and being played with and paying attention. The teens always seem ‘too cool’ to do things like sing or dance, I was shocked when moms and dads were dancing, playing and singing along with Catherine. There was no goofing off, just great behavior.” Said Vera Casey- Collaborative staff. It was a pleasure to be a part of this initiative to guide these young parents in building social and emotional connections with their children.
