About Wawi AmashaWawi Amasha is a self taught artist specializing in acrylics and digital painting. In 2002 upon completing her bachelors degree in communication at Chapman University, she moved to Santa Monica, California. There she met an artist neighbor who inspired her to start painting.
Her paintings are an idealistic, lively, representation of village life from her native Kenya, portraying an imagined reality with intricate details lending tangible textures. Her distinctive style exudes a peaceful and joyous atmosphere which weaves the audience into the homeland. Her work portrays the elegantly simple and exquisite aspects of African culture that treasure all things nature and community. She advocates for the preservation of indigenous life and organic farming through permaculture practice. Wawi is one of the principle artists at the Cheza Nami Foundation, a nonprofit organization that specializes in promoting African culture and diversity within the Bay Area. Wawi facilitate art and beading workshops for both children and adults and volunteers her skills for local elders. In 2014, her work was featured among nine African artists in the WPP Media annual report and accounts folder. Wawi creates wearable art in the form of jewelry and fashion using recycled beads, found sea shells, harvested seeds and African textiles. Her jewelry has been displayed and sold in various shops and galleries and was recently featured at the Museum of African Diaspora gift shop in San Francisco. She has created stage costumes for several musicians including Grammy nominated Ghana reggae star Rocky Dawuni. Wawi is featured on the Africa Chanel “My Africa” a short documentary showcasing her home country. Wawi was born and raised in Kenya and currently resides in San Francisco where she continues to explore her artistic journey. In addition to original works of art Wawi offers limited edition high quality canvas giclée prints. As the artist explains, “I am a story teller and I welcome you to join me on this visual journey.” |
