May this series inspire you to get up and dance.
Humans have danced around the fire, often through the night as part of communal rituals or ceremonies. Both women, men and children participate in these rituals because they strengthen the community and each other. Dancing and singing are a part of life. Many cultures in Africa hold harvest ceremonies in order to bless the newly harvested crops and purify the people before they eat the foods. The full moon ceremony observed in many parts as a time to honor the moon and its cycles.  Dances are the means by which individuals relate to the ancestors and other divinities. I wanted to capture a feeling of bliss that comes from completely being engulfed in the beat of the drum during these ceremonies.

*Giclée fine art printing provides a luminosity and brilliance that represents the artist’s original artwork better than any fine art reproduction technique available today.  Combined with the finest quality canvas and inks, giclée fine art reproductions rival original artwork in beauty and detail.

About Wawi Amasha

Wawi Amasha is a fine artist specializing in acrylics and digital painting. In 2002 upon completing her bachelors degree in communication at Chapman University, she moved to Santa Monica, California. There she met an artist neighbor who inspired her to start painting.

Her paintings are a dynamic and colorful representation of village life in her native Kenya, portraying lively landscapes and people with intricate textures and patterns. Her distinctive style  exudes a peaceful and joyous atmosphere which weaves the audience into the homeland. Her work captures the beauty and reverence for the planet within African culture, which is a way of life that treasures the natural world by living symbiotically with Nature. She advocates for the preservation of indigenous life and organic farming through permaculture practice.

Wawi is one of the principle artists at the Cheza Nami Foundation, a nonprofit organization specializes in promoting African culture and diversity within the Bay Area. She facilitates art and beading workshops for both children and adults and volunteers her skills for local elders.

Wawi creates wearable art in the form of jewelry and fashion using recycled beads, found sea shells, harvested seeds and African textiles. Her jewelry has been displayed and sold in various shops and galleries and was recently featured at the Museum of African Diaspora gift shop in San Francisco. She has created stage costumes for several musicians including Grammy nominated Ghana reggae star Rocky Dawuni. Wawi is featured on the Africa Chanel “My Africa” a short documentary showcasing her home country.

Wawi was born and raised in Kenya and currently resides in San Francisco where she continues to explore her artistic journey. As the artist explains, “I am a story teller and I welcome you to join me on this visual journey.”
